The Kingdom Rush series has always been the pinnacle of mobile tower defense, and Frontiers is arguably the best entry in the franchise. Playing it on Apple Arcade is a revelation. In the original release, many of the coolest heroes were locked behind expensive paywalls. Here, every single hero—from the mighty dragon to the alien warlord—is included. Being able to experiment with different hero-tower combinations without spending extra money unlocks the true strategic depth the game was designed for.
The level design is spectacular. The maps are dynamic and interactive; a pirate ship might bombard your towers, or man-eating plants might consume your troops. You are constantly forced to adapt on the fly. The balance between the four base tower types and their specialized upgrades is perfect, requiring actual thought and planning rather than just spamming your strongest unit.
The art style remains charming and vibrant, and the voice lines are full of humorous pop-culture references. While the Mac port has had some frustrating technical issues with the mouse disappearing, the iOS version runs flawlessly. It is incredibly addictive, perfectly balanced, and an absolute must-play for strategy fans.
If you’re going to play a tower defense game, this is the one. I’ve played them all—from the old Warcraft 3 mods to modern clones—and nothing matches the balance and personality of Kingdom Rush. Frontiers is often cited as the best in the series, and for good reason. Every level is a puzzle that requires genuine thought and timing. It’s not just about building towers; it’s about managing your hero and using your reinforcements at the exact right second. It’s stressful, but in the best way possible.
What makes this '+' version so good is that all the heroes are unlocked. In the original, you had to pay real money for the coolest characters, which I always found insulting. Now, the game is purely about skill. The art style is charming and filled with pop-culture references that I actually appreciate. It’s a solid, conservative 85 because it’s a perfect execution of a classic genre. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it polishes it to a mirror finish.
Performance: Runs perfectly; no issues even with many units on screen.
Buy if: You love deep strategy, micromanagement, and challenging gameplay.
Skip if: You want a relaxing game or hate the tower defense genre.
Available on: Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod
